In response to some of the responders...

It is irresponsible to say that this young lass doesn't have breast cancer because of her age. It is HIGHLY unlikely because of her age, but not impossible and whatever it is be it marks from a too tight bra or stretch marks, it needs attention.

Secondly, breast cancer doesn't always present as a lump - it can cause discharge from the ****** indicating a problem (sometimes cancer, sometimes not) in the ducts. This cannot be felt when examining the breast.

Any change in the color or feel of the skin of the breast, areola, or ****** (dimpled, puckered, or scaly) needs to be taken seriously. For more information

Pain is never an indicator of breast cancer. Many breast cancers are painless in the beginning. Know your facts!!!

Females of ANY age can get breast cancer and for all of the males out there, males can get breast cancer! Male breast cancer is uncommon, but men account for approximately 1% of all breast cancer cases. Men should also examine their breasts for lumps, bumps, skin discolouration, scaliness etc. exactly the same way as women do!

A great website for more information is

Talk to your mum hon, and see your doctor to put your mind at rest.

I am a registered nurse and have considerable experience in paediatric oncology (cancer specialty).

You are only 13, and still growing. If you have any concern get your parents to take you to see a doctor. If you don't feel any lumps when you do a self exam, you're probably alright. The only way to know for sure is to be examined by a doctor. They will do blood work to check for cancer cells. And if they see something wrong they will do a mamogram. If they find a lump they do what is called a biopsy where they insert a needle into you breast and collect a sample to be tested for cancer.

If those marks weren't left by your underclothes their probably stretch marks. It happens when you develop. Have your mom examine you. She'll know what to do.

I doubt at 13 that you have breast cancer but its good that you pay attention to your body and changes that it goes through. only a doctor can tell for sure if it is cancer. if you are still concerned about it have your mom or dad schedule you an appointment. here is the list of symptoms that you asked for though:

A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area.
A change in the size or shape of the breast.
A discharge from the ******.
A change in the color or feel of the skin of the breast, areola, or ****** (dimpled, puckered, or scaly).

That's not breast cancer... breast cancer is a small lump deep under the skin, it doesn't affect the skin at all. No scratch marks or redness, just a lump of hardness. What you have is probably from your bra.

Sounds like exactly what you said, a stretch mark. Sometimes you can get these on your breast if you have had a growth spurt and your skin elasticity could not keep up therefor resulted in the mark. Breast cancer is when you find a lump in your breast, the doctor confirms and takes a sample of it, runs a test, and confirms the lump is cancerous. Even then, there are benign and malignant lumps determining if the cancer is life threatening or not. No need to worry, you sound like a healthy teenager.

No. You need not worry and it is not breast cancer. It is called GYNECOMASTIA. It is the Breast enlargement in a male. It usually involves only the ****** and nearby tissue of one breast. More rarely, the whole breast grows to a size normal in a female. True gynecomastia is related to an increase in estrogens. Testicular or pituitary-gland tumours commonly cause gynecomastia. Similar conditions (pseudogynecomastia) are caused by excessive body fat, inflammatory disorders, granular lesions, or growth of tumours. -

Causes -
Physiologic gynecomastia (also called Turcios Disease) occurs in neonates, at or before puberty and with aging. Many cases of gynecomastia are idiopathic, meaning they have no clear cause. Potential pathologic causes of gynecomastia are: medications including hormones, increased serum estrogen, decreased testosterone production, androgen receptor defects, chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease, HIV treatment, and other chronic illness. Gynecomastia as a result of spinal cord injury and refeeding after starvation has been reported. In 25% of cases, the cause of the gynecomastia is not known.-

Treating the underlying cause of the gynecomastia may lead to improvement in the condition. Patients should talk with their doctor about revising any medications that are found to be causing gynecomastia; often, an alternative medication can be found that avoids gynecomastia side-effects, while still treating the primary condition for which the original medication was found not to be suitable due to causing gynecomastia side-effects.-
